Conflict management techniques developed over the past thirty years have great potential to reduce the costs of conflict. Making daily practice live up to that potential, however, is not easy.

CONVENOR has a long history of contributions to the development of conflict resolution as an integrated field. This "R&D" work has focused on six major areas:

• Building a real field of conflict resolution (Broad Field project.) The project's final and most ambitious product is The Negotiator's Fieldbook.
• The relationship between ideas and practice (Theory to Practice project)
• Qualifications and quality control (particularly in mediation)
• Ethics
• Developing infrastructure
• What really happens when there are legal requirements to negotiate (a selection of case decisions, focusing on the issues implicit in "bargaining in the shadow of the law")
